California’s capital city is noticeably neither of the state’s most famous urban areas, but when discovered it rewards visitors with a distinct feel, a tapestry of historic Frontier neighborhoods, rather than a homogenous, sprawling metropolis. The city’s pretty landscape is completed by hundreds of thousands of trees of all types, some of which were planted by settlers at the city’s founding. Street performers dot the streets of Old Sacramento, which is also home to lots of entertainment and shopping. North Sacramento is the arts district. Folsom is intensely historic and also features one of the city’s most interesting attractions, the Folsom Zoo. Just across the river, Davis is home to a University of California campus.
